New Camaro unveiled

Born in 1966 as General Motors' answer to the Ford Mustang "pony car", the revived Camaro was unveiled this week in the United States in production form to go on sale in North America next year.

At the same time, the Australian-based designers and engineers involved in the new coupe held their own unveiling at GM Holden's headquarters in Melbourne.

The iconic sports car was designed in the US, engineered by GM's global rear-wheel-drive team in Australia, tested and validated on Australian roads and assembled in Canada. It's tipped the Camaro could be imported to Australia, following GM Holden adding the Hummer last year and Cadillac later this year.

However, GM Holden media relations manager John Lindsay said there was "no official confirmation yet from GM on whether it will be produced in right-hand-drive".

Auto air conditioning 101

This contamination eats away at the inside of the system resulting in rust and scale buildup, corrosion and erosion in vital A/C system parts. Proper A/C system leak tests are necessary to identify the source of a leak.

There are three types of leak inspections: visual, halogen, and dye testing. The visual test includes inspection of all lines and external components (specifically condensers, hi and low pressure lines, compressors, air dryers, and expansion valves). Any indication of refrigerant oil on these components is an indication of a leak and the component must be replaced.

The halogen tester is designed to detect the presence of leaking refrigerant gas, which is odorless and colorless. The tech scans the system with the flexible probe on the tester. If there is a leak, then the tester will howl, light up, or click.

Do some math before trading in SUV

Local car dealers say there are many like Predmore looking to trade in their lower gas mileage vehicles once unleaded fuel prices starting setting records. Demand for trucks and sport utility vehicles - as well as their market value - has decreased significantly due to rising gas prices, they say.

"SUVs and full-size trucks are flooding the market and driving prices down," said Chris Lewis, the finance manager at Bob's Auto Market. "Though there are a few people buying SUVs and trucks, there are not many as compared to a few years ago."

Steve Stevens, owner of Stevens Auto Sales agrees, but advises people to do some math before they rush out to trade in the gas guzzler for the gas sipper.

"On average, the value of SUVs and full-size trucks has dropped $3,000 - that will buy a lot of gas for a long time for the average person," Stevens said.

Hyundai's little diesel delight

Hyundai will face interesting times over the coming months as Toyota leads the Japanese into the diesel segment of the new passenger-car market. It's a niche that Hyundai has performed strongly in over recent years, carving out a solid foothold alongside the Europeans that have been playing the diesel game for a decade or more.

Toyota is leading off this month with a diesel Corolla range, which will pitch in as a direct rival to the Hyundai i30 CRDi that is the subject of this test. It is just as well for Hyundai, then, that the i30 is - when judged against top-in-class standards - the Korean company's best vehicle yet.

Starting with the outside, it is possessed of cohesive good looks that are distinctive yet not too quirky. Visual parallels have been drawn with BMW's 1-series, in part because both vehicles use a sloping rear roofline to create a coupe-like look.

America's love affair fades as the car becomes burden of suburbia

Sales of big cars are plummeting while smaller vehicles, especially fuel-efficient hybrids, are replacing them.

GM has now closed SUV production at four plants. Its Hummer brand is up for sale, or might even be closed. GM is ploughing huge resources into its 2010 launch of the Chevy Volt, a hybrid car that may get up to 150 miles a gallon. It needs to. GM's share price recently hit a 54-year low, prompting one top investment bank to warn that the firm could go bankrupt.

The Volt, and cars like it, could become symbols of a new more conservation-minded car age. As Americans enjoyed the 4 July holiday weekend, increasing numbers of them were staying at home rather than hitting the road. Newspapers were full of tips for 'stay-cations', not weekend breaks away. Customs once scorned, such as car pooling and cutting out trips to the mall, are now commonplace.

Honda and Porsche have a certain APEAL

The collated facts make up the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study.

Now in its 13th year, the 2008 APEAL findings show a significant decrease in ‘owner delight', with fuel economy accounting for 50% of this drop. On a 1,000-point scale, an average APEAL score is 770, a decline of 2% since last year. Considering fuel prices went up by 27% over the same period, car manufacturers seem to be doing a good job of easing the pain.

They're accomplishing this with toys. Only in the audio, entertainment and navigation category have scores improved. “Manufacturers are working to increase customer delight by introducing entertainment and navigation technology that owners find particularly appealing," says David Sargent, VP of automotive research at JDPA.

Land Rover LR2: For the power-hungry people

The car is focused on the power-hungry car lovers thus comes with a powerful engine and stylish design. Being the replacement of Freelander, the LR2 is called Freelander in other markets. The car is competent enough with high end compact SUVs' like the Acura RDX or BMW X3. The car was first showcased in the Paris auto show in September 2007. The car is built of the Ford C1 platform. Longer wheelbase, increased interior space, upgraded engine, dust, mud, and water resistance, off road features... LR2 has got a good number of features to boast upon. LR2 is powered by the new 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine which is upgraded for off-road use to resist dust, mud, and water. The six cylinder engine generates 230 horsepower and 234 pound-feet of torque. The twin-cam 24-valve engine has variable valve timing as well as a multistage intake system.

What the Newspaper Industry Could Learn from GM About Do or Die

Toyota was talking about a few hundred experimental cars in a controlled setting, not tens of thousands of cars in dealer showrooms, a much less ambitious goal than GM’s. But Toyota is famous for under-promising and over-delivering.

In February, Tesla, the Silicon Valley company, announced plans for an electric sedan with a gasoline-powered generator, like the Volt—but set to arrive a year earlier, in late 2009. In March, BMW said it might produce an electric car for the U.S. market, and in May, Nissan said it would have one in test fleets in 2010. The drumbeat seems likely to continue. Simply by announcing the Volt, GM has attracted a bevy of competitors, bringing the electric car’s mass-market advent from over the horizon to around the corner.

A bold new vision won’t immediately turn the economic tide, but it could turn the tide of defeatism.

Sporty and clean

Zero crashes: A preview of the car of the future

A dashboard-mounted display, with green, red and yellow alert lights, measures unsafe moves such as speeding and sharp braking, and sends the data to a database that parents can access. The phone company T-Mobile has tested the device in 250 of its vehicles. It says that it has saved £417,000 in crash damage and 3 per cent in fuel costs in 12 months. To forestall employee fears, a function to identify individual drivers is switched off. That, however, might change.

Hitting the roads Imagine the Big Brother backlash if a mandatory system were proposed.

Fuel costs force many to cut food budgets

A further one in 10 said they would consider getting rid of their car altogether if fuel prices continue to climb.

A litre of unleaded petrol currently costs an average of £1.18, a rise of 22 per cent over the past 12 months. It is estimated that the cost of filling an average-sized car could rise to £72.60, with drivers of larger executive cars having to pay more than £85.

Mark Dowsey and his wife, Joanne, tell the programme that rising fuel prices have forced them to cancel their summer holiday for the first time in seven years. About six months ago it cost Mrs Dowsey, 50, £30 to fill up her diesel car - it now costs her £45. Filling up her husband's diesel van has increased from £50 to £75.

Fond du Lac couple beats high fuel prices with new electric car

After shopping around at an electric car dealer in Janesville, the Hylands plunked down about $11,000 for a Miles ZX40S in May. With room for four, plenty of safety features and a top speed of 25 mph the car is the ideal around-town ride for the family.

At first, Paul, a former military man, thought he would be the laughingstock of the neighborhood for driving around in the small car. He was wrong. Not only does he chuckle every time he passes a gas station, the car "gets more attention than a 1968 Pontiac GTO."

Other motorists stare, and people are constantly approaching the couple to find out more about the vehicle.

"It happens everywhere; it's hilarious," said Meghan. "We can't go anywhere without people asking us about the car. Someone even rang our doorbell at 8:30 at night to talk to us."

The reaction of passersby is usually the same.

Driving 55 isn’t the answer, but it’sa start

Given technological improvements since 1974, at what speed is the typical vehicle most fuel efficient?

2. If a national speed limit were enacted, what would be total fuel savings, and what would be the savings for the average driver?

3. How many fewer barrels of oil a day would Americans consume? Would there be a reduction in price at the pump, and what ranges would cost reductions be?

4. If the feds reduced their oil consumption as asked, how many barrels of oil might be saved?

Congress will be considering all its options, said Sen. Warner, who reminded Secretary Bodman that, years ago, the 55-mph speed limit, officially known as the Emergency Energy Conservation Act, “worked."

Rising fuel prices could influence car market

The current boom in diesel car sales could slow down, as the average price of diesel fuel at the end of June reached 132.27p per litre - 22.5 per cent higher than it was at the beginning of the year, according to figures from Experian, the global information services company.

The figures provided by Catalist, an Experian company, show the biggest increase in diesel fuel prices for the first six months of any year in the last decade.

The average price of petrol has also increased significantly to 118.9p per litre - 15.4 per cent higher at the end of June compared to the beginning of the year.

Furthermore, while both diesel and petrol prices have been rising, diesel prices have crept up at a faster rate over the last six months. There is now an 11.2 per cent difference between petrol and diesel prices, compared to a 4.8 per cent difference in January 2008.

Japan's New Green Car Push

A new version of the Prius, which promises to be lighter and more fuel-efficient than the current generation, should also appear in 2009, and a plug-in version, which like the Volt will use lithium-ion batteries, is due to arrive a year later. By 2010, Toyota is also believed to be planning two more dedicated hybrid models, including a new hybrid minivan.

Toyota Takes a Long-Term View

Toyota will start production of Camry hybrids in Thailand next year and in Australia from 2010, and is already building a new factory in Japan for nickel-metal hydride batteries used in today's hybrids. "Toyota will continue to increase production of its current hybrid technology and should be selling over 800,000 units a year before we even see the first Chevy Volt," says Kurt Sanger, an analyst at Deutsche Bank (DB) in Tokyo.

Electric dreams: Running on nothing

All a Roadster owner has to do is spend to maintain the car. And because it's electric, there are fewer moving parts in it than in internal-combustion vehicles, so maintenance is significantly much easier.

The response to the Tesla Roadster has been phenomenal. Since it started selling earlier this year, the car has not just been sold out, but there a one-year waiting list for those who are willing to wait to get one.

Being a sports car, and an electric one to boot, the car is not cheap. But surprisingly, it's no more expensive than less-efficient, worse-performing sports cars that run internal-combustion engines. At $109,000 (around P4.7 million), most of the Roadster price is due to the fact that the vehicle is, in fact, a performance sports car. And it's a sports car because Tesla wanted to prove a point about electric cars.

BMW Unveils New 7-Series Sedan, Expects Profit Boost (Update1)

BMW's flagship model ``will contribute a great deal'' to achieving the automaker's 2012 profit targets, Chief Executive Officer Norbert Reithofer said at an event in Munich to introduce the car. The fifth generation of the 7-Series will go on sale this fall, with a range of new technology, including four-wheel steering, in-car Internet access, and a night-vision feature that warns drivers of people near the roadway.

The company has a program in place to cut spending by 6 billion euros ($9.4 billion), including the elimination of 8,100 jobs, to help increase its return on sales in automaking to 8 percent and 10 percent by 2012 from 6 percent in 2007. Since Munich-based BMW announced the target in September, oil futures have jumped 87 percent and steel prices have climbed 63 percent.

'New Happiness' returns to the basics

The car seems to come with the beautiful model, the perfect clothing, the glamorous cityscape, the perfect countryside, the group of uproarious friends. The beer isn't merely fermented barley - it's "the high life," somehow the golden essence of everything you want. As consumers, we're no doubt too experienced to accept such notions at face value. Still, we yearn, and so we listen. And buy. Of course, most of us are taught and believe that mere stuff won't make us happy, even if it can yield genuine pleasures. We have deeper or more profound longings than our longing for beer. We long to be loved, and to love, to know and be known, to do meaningful work, to find beauty or to achieve eternal happiness in ecstatic union with God. Even these get sucked into the economy. The Web site eHarmony markets true love.

HighLineMeter.com Celebrates One-Year Anniversary with Customer

The success of the High-Line Meter within the car dealer market segment is greatly attributed to the quality, function, and reliability that until now, only seemed possible for gauges costing three times as much. The DOA failure rate on High-Line Meters currently being used in the field is practically non-existent.When the final numbers had been tallied from their internal QC study results, it was found that zero High-Line Meters were returned for manufacturer defects. This is great news for the budget conscience buyers who have yet to make a decision on a paint thickness gauge. On the other hand, according to HighLineMeter.com, this should not be a surprise to the droves of satisfied and loyal customers who kept coming back. The survey showed that only 3 units have been returned since the initial debut of the High-Line Meter.

Rising fuel cost: Consumers prefer diesel cars, cos increase

MUMBAI: Consumers have begun opting for diesel versions of popular car models in the wake of rising fuel costs, forcing carmakers to step up production of the diesel variants in recent months. The Indian car market, which grew 8% last year, comprises largely petrol-driven cars, which also bring in higher business margins.

Maruti Suzuki's fast movers Swift and Dzire are selling 65% diesel variants and others like Tata Motors, M&M, GM, Hyundai and Ford are jacking up production of the diesel models. Tata's Indica and Indigo, Mahindra's Logan, GM's Optra and Hyundai Verna and Sonata are seeing an increase in diesel model sales in recent months.

The trend towards diesel models is forcing Maruti Suzuki to launch the diesel and the petrol variant of the Splash hatchback and is understood to be jacking up production of its diesel engine plant to three lakh units from one lakh units.

Trade Ministry weighs production of Agassi's electric car in Israel

Manufacturers note that the decisive factor in the sales of hybrid and electric cars is the rising price of gas, rather than environmental protection issues.

A number of other attempts are being made to develop yet additional alternatively powered vehicles, including using biotechnology power. Powering with bio-fuel produced from such foods as corn has garnered much criticism over the past year, and is considered one of the central factors in rising food prices and food shortages around the world.

Salvage yards have planning board support

They say they provide an important service of recycling vehicles and offering inexpensive car parts. They say there are few industrially zoned areas in the city large enough to store hundreds of junk cars.

Councilman Keith Bates has been pushing for the demise of salvage yards since he was first elected in 2005.

"It distracts from the beauty of the city, and it detracts from the neighborhoods," he said.

John Diffin, owner of Diffin Auto Salvage on Horseshoe Road, said his operation is not an eyesore. A fence shields the property out front, and he said his business can’t been seen from nearby Yadkin Road. He doesn’t know what he would do if he had to close.

"I’m so old that I’m not ready to move," the 86-year-old said.

A Metallic Blue, MG 25

I indicate to the car behind to see if they saw what happened, say to Mel 'He just tried to hit me!' then realise I don't have his licence plate number. So I set off after him - ah don't you love urban traffic. I sit on his tail for about 30 seconds, him looking in the mirror the whole time, me ready in case he locks the wheels up, and make sure he's aware that I'm taking the time to memorise his number.

The police were great on the phone (I forgot to look up the name of the street and he waited for me to find it commenting, 'you were too busy still being alive', and his comment when I mentioned that Mel was there and saw parts of what happened was 'excellent'). Got an incident number, will be making a full statement tonight.

I know people will come on here and say that I instigated it by hitting his car, and I have to accept that to an extent - my only defence being it's not something I do as a matter of course (see above) and felt completely instinctive at the time to avoid being crushed betwixt MG and parked car.

Restored Jeepster gives car buffs the Willys

Over time, the account grew to the point where he could afford to buy more expensive cars and the parts needed for the restoration. Today, he regularly searches online auction sites looking for parts and the next project.

"I like orphan cars that are rare, something that people wouldn't ordinarily buy to restore, but there's a market for it when it's done."

The Jeepster certainly fits into that category.

Manufactured by the Willys Overland company, which built the famous Willys Jeep for Allied forces during the Second World War, the Jeepster was designed to be a truck-like grocery-getter. It had the trademark Willys grille similar to the wartime Jeep, a removeable canvas top, a fold-down backseat area and even steps on the side for the kids to climb in.

Auto industry takes on the SUV-less world

When the SUV owners go to a car dealership, they might expect a trade-in deal as they have done in the past. But now is not then.

Things have changed and people are often unprepared for the paltry amount being offered. The dealers want the sellers to know it’s a new SUV-less world out there, especially in southern California where distances are long and the time spent commuting can be even longer.

Tom Marmonde, general manager of Paradise Chevrolet in Ventura, said people have been coming to his dealership to buy small cars after trading in their SUVs.

"Some of the people are shocked at the trade-in value and don’t trade them in," Marmonde said.

So, how much less are people being offered by the dealership? Sellers may expect to get the Kelley Blue Book value.

Toyota wants to sell 100000 of upcoming new, larger hybrid model

Details have started to emerge surrounding the new hybrid, with the most recent speculation indicating the car will utilize solar panels developed by Kyocera to aid in its overall fuel efficiency. As previously reported, Toyota vice president Masatami Takimoto indicated the all-new car will be bigger than the Prius and will also be sold under the Lexus brand name.

The yet unnamed hybrid can be expected to employ a revised version of the automaker's current nickel metal hydride synergy drive powertrain. Mated to the unit is thought to be either a 2.0- or 2.5-liter gasoline combustion engine. Not to be outdone by GM's 2010 Chevrolet Volt plug-in, Toyota has also recently increased its research and development of plug-in hybrids and lithium-ion technologies -- two new elements finding their way throughout the company's future lineup by as early as 2010.

Global Auto Giants Recognizing Korean Car Parts

Deepak Feather, a purchasing agent for Ford, and a worker for a Korean car parts manufacturer spoke at a booth in an exhibition.

The worker showed his companys brochure to Feather and explained which bolts are used in car manufacturing, to which Feather replied, Very nice.

Ford has indirectly bought Korean parts via global car parts providers, Feather said. Were considering buying parts directly from Korean manufacturers because Korean car parts have good quality and lower prices.

If the free trade agreement between the U.S. and Korea takes effect, tariffs on Korean products will be abolished. That means the price competitiveness of Korean products will increase and Ford will buy more Korean car parts.

Last year, Korea shipped abroad car parts worth 12.4 billion dollars, equivalent to a third of the nations car exports of 35.7 billion dollars.

2nd UPDATE: Renault CEO Sees Europe Car Market Contracting In 08

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- The European car market will contract in 2008, French automaker Renault's (13190.FR) Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said Tuesday. Speaking at the company's annual shareholder meeting, Ghosn said the first three months in Europe "were not easy" and said he doesn't see a reason why this could change in the coming months. Mature auto markets are "at best stagnant and very probably contracting," he told shareholders. The slack in mature auto markets will be more than offset by strong demand from emerging markets Brazil, Russia, China and India, so the global car market as a whole will grow, he added. However, the time isn't right for the company to launch Renault in China, because the company is already stretched with projects in countries such as Russia, Iran, India and Morocco, Ghosn also said.
